There is no life in the monastery without the cloister garden.
Why did the Franciscans need this garden?
Life was impossible without it. Brewing beer, washing the monks’ habits, disinfecting the refectories, healing the sick, fasting, feasting, celebrating religious festivals, or even to signal to ones fellow human beings that one embodied certain virtues (or not). None of this was possible without the products from the cloister garden. Meditation, painting, nurturing herbs, all this is still possible in the garden.
