A New Museum in the Baltic Region
The vision of a new museum on the Greifswalder Bodden was taken up enthusiastically by the University of Greifswald and the senate of the Hanseatic town of Greifswald. They participated actively in creating the necessary conditions for the project.
The town council provided the land and civic collections; the university contributed its valuable art treasures. The Federal authorities and the state of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania became two strong partners supporting the project.
It soon became clear, that a ‘Pomeranian Museum’, could only operate in close cooperation with Polish and Scandinavian institutions, considering the turbulent history of Pomerania. With this in mind an advisory council was set up consisting of experts from Poland, Sweden and Denmark who were to be consulted on the contents of the proposed museum. Besides establishing a platform to present the Pomeranian’s state and cultural history, the museum understands itself as a forum for the Baltic region and a venue for cross-border get-togethers and projects, with an emphasis on working with young people.
More than 100,000 people have already visited the public gallery, which opened in 2000 as the first house. On 4 June 2005 the complete building consisting of 6 houses and 4 outdoor areas was opened to the public.
