250 Steps towards Caspar David Friedrich

A hiking trail with interactive stages

15.03.2024 – 05.01.2025

Inspired by Friedrich's hikes, from March 2024 onward the Pomeranian State Museum invites visitors to set out on their own "art journey on foot" independent of the individual art exhibition. Past several interactive stations that encourage creative engagement with Caspar David Friedrich and his period, a specially created route leads from the forecourt onto the Museums road. Even during the remodelling periods when no originals are on display, along this way, an installation of the legendary "blue flower", a treadmill for own walks and a time box concerning the year 1818 can be found.

Hiking workshop

15.03.2024 – 05.01.2025

In a hiking workshop, all visitors are invited to get creative themselves. Inspired by installations, working materials and picture examples, they can design their own sketchbook.

In the Caspar-David-Friedrich-Centre (04.05. - 13.10.2024) and in the Socio-Cultural Center St. Spiritus (25.06. - 20.09.) you can continue working on this sketchbook.

In collaboration with Barbara Julia Sandleben, artistic assistant at the Chair of Painting, Drawing, Space and Interdisciplinary Artistic Strategies at the Caspar David Friedrich Institute (University of Greifswald) and her students as well as Jo Zynda, Dipl. Designer.

Hiroyuki Masuyama. Time traveler

19.07.2024 – 05.01.2025

Cabinet exhibition in the cinema room of the Pomeranian State Museum

As a time traveler Hiroyuki Masuyama follows Caspar David Friedrich's wandering routes. Just as the 19th century painter created his pictures on the basis of countless studies of nature, the 21st century digital artist composes his landscapes from 300-500 photographs each. The result is backlit works that resemble their models in an irritating way and yet sensitively explore the changes over time.

The presentation includes a small selection of works by Masuyama after paintings by Friedrich showing landscapes of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, including the "Monk by the Sea" and the "Steps of Life" - two new creations from the jubilee year 2024.

Opening: Thursday, July 18, 2024, 6:00 p.m.

Götz Lemberg: cdf light

from 07.03.2024

Light art on the forecourt of the Pomeranian State Museum

The anniversary year begins with a highlight: a light sculpture by Berlin artist Götz Lemberg. It takes some of Caspar David Friedrich's most famous motifs as a starting point and transforms them into glowing, floating light drawings. With "cdf light", the Pomeranian State Museum opens up into the urban space. The museum's forecourt will be permanently illuminated day and night, even beyond the anniversary year.

Viewed from different angles, the individual lines of light come together to form drawings: back views of people, the city skyline of Greifswald, the ruins of Eldena Abbey and an old oak tree.

Opening: Thursday, March 7, 6:00 p.m.

The Land of Light

March 2024 – January 2025

Installation in the atrium of the Pomeranian State Museum

Together with Greifswald artist Marcus Schramm, pupils from the Greifschule have explored the color palette of Caspar David Friedrich's skies. The result is a unique interior design that will accompany hikers throughout the anniversary year as a "sky tent".

Hiking residence in the Giant Mountains

March 2024 – January 2025

Landscape - Dance - Music

In 1810, Caspar David Friedrich set off with Georg Friedrich Kersting to the Riesengebirge/Karkonosze/Krkonoše, where he also gathered inspiration for his painting "Eldena Ruin in the Giants Mountain" (Pomerian State Museum). Małgosia Suś (dancer) and Matthias Schriefl (musician) followed in his footsteps as part of the "traveling residency" offered by the Berlin-Wrocław cultural train. What happens when artists encounter this unique landscape today? The film "Sketches from the Giant Mountains" documents their journey, the rehearsals, musical and dance improvisations, sense and nonsense.

The traveling residency was made possible by the Cultural Department for Pomerania and East Brandenburg and the Cultural Department for Silesia in cooperation with the culture train Berlin-Wrocław, curated by Oliver Spatz and Natalie Wasserman and accompanied by the Pomeranian State Museum (Dr. Birte Frenssen, Dorota Makrutzki).

Retrospective

The painter's dream

16.03. – 07.07.2024

Installation in the cinema room of the Pomeranian State Museum

In 1835, Caspar David Friedrich sent a box of four transparent paintings to St. Petersburg - along with a detailed description of how the paintings were to be exhibited: In a room with lighting and music, the viewer should experience a total work of art. The banners have been lost, but three preliminary drawings have survived. In the exhibition, the total work of art conceived by Friedrich will be recreated on this basis. Pupils from the Montessori music school have composed new music to accompany the pictures.

Opening: Saturday, March 16, 11:00 a.m.

From 2 October to 21 December 2024, the installation will be presented at the Caspar David Friedrich Centre.
