A New Museum in the Baltic Region
The University of Greifswald and the city council showed great commitment to the vision of a new State Museum at the Baltic coast. Both institutions actively supported the establishment of requirements necessary.
So the city council provided properties and the local collection. The University provided its most valuable art treasures. The German government and the federal state Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania supported as strong partners the project.
Everybody was aware of the fact that a State Museum Pomerania is only feasible in co-operation with Poland and Sweden. That is down to the changeful and close history between the three countries. A scientific advisory council with professional representatives from Poland, Sweden and Denmark was established. This council should support the development of a concept of the museum.
The new house sees itself as an exhibition of Pomeranian history and culture as well as a place for a forum in the Baltic Sea area, for transnational work, especially for international youth work.
In 2000 the picture gallery opened as the first house of all. On the 4th June 2004 the whole complex, composed of six houses and four outdoor facilities, was opened to the public
